Leg 3, Interlude 2: Lansing
Today was a day off in Lansing. This was a combo tourism/chores day.
For chores, we once again did bathroom sink laundry (no laundromats near our hotel). I also fixed my malfunctioning bike computer. Somehow the spoke magnet had slipped, even though the attachment screw was still very tight.
We also did some shopping to replenish our snacks, sunblocks, and medicine.
In the early afternoon, we checked out the R.E. Olds museum. R.E. Olds founded Oldsmobile, and then founded R.E.O. Motors (of Speedwagon fame). The highlight of the museum was a '72 Olds Vista Cruiser: imitation wood paneling, tinted moon roof, reversible seat in the way back, you name it. This car would have made you the undisputed King of the Drive-In.
They also have a steam-powered clock, and the "World's Largest Lugnut". The clock was interesting, but I gotta say the lugnut was underwhelming.
At dinnertime, we took the bus over to East Lansing, where the Michigan State University campus is. We got dinner, and checked out the Broad Art Museum, which had some fun exhibits. We also poked around in a really cool old bookstore.
Some more rain today, and it's become obvious that I really need a new raincoat. I'll try to do that when we get to Ann Arbor.
Both Lansing and East Lansing were really dead. This is maybe not so surprising since it's a Sunday, and a holiday weekend. But, I mean Lansing was really dead. We maybe only saw 6 or 8 other people on the sidewalks. East Lansing was also fairly disappointing. Michigan State is a humongous school, and yet the area around the college was mostly just cone short strip of mostly chain restaurants. I expected more of an Allston vibe, but it was more like Burlington.
