Leg 2, Ride 5: South Haven to Holland

We got an early start today, and finished most of our riding before lunch. Today's our first theme park of the trip!

Today's ride was about 2/3 on-road, and 1/3 on sidepaths. Roads were very quiet today. I'm not sure if that's because it's Sunday, or if that's just how things are around here. We will find out tomorrow.

Summer has reached us! Despite being within a stone's throw of Lake Michigan for 12 days, today is the first day that it was warm enough to actually go into the water. Good timing, because we'll only have about 10 more miles near the lake.

This was mostly a rural ride today, although we did pass through the small cities of Douglas and Saugatuck. Most of the lakeside towns here have a little bit more of a west-coast vibe (especially near the beaches), but Saugatuck felt more like Rockport or Marblehead.

It's now been 19 days since we left, and that's 19 days largely without music. I usually have music playing for hours every day: I listen when I'm working on the computer, when I'm cooking, when I'm out for a walk, when I'm commuting, and when I'm riding my e-bike for more than a few minutes. I even have a speaker in the bathroom so I can listen to music while showering. Being without music feels weird, and one symptom is that songs get stuck in my head for a long long time. Today's earworm is "Obsession" by Animotion which has been playing non-stop in my head since last night.

We finished the day in Holland. Had lunch downtown and walked around exploring for a bit. Then spent the afternoon at a couple of Dutch-themed parks. One has the only working Dutch windmill in the US, and the other had a ferris wheel and clog dancing. Both had street organs. (Note to self: build a street organ!)
